Pickering Town 1-0 Marske United

By

Marske started 2019 as they finished 2018, with another defeat, making it 5 league games without a win in the process.

Teams:

Pickering: Andrew, Bissett (Turnbull), Danby, Barkway, Vaulks, Tilsley, Logan,
Lund, Blott, Freer (Davison), Dalton (McAughtrie)
Subs (not used): Emery, Greening
Marske: Dean, Martin, Rowbotham, Butterworth, May, Wheatley, Plant, Gott,
Waters (Fairley), Owens, Round

Subs (not used): Liddle, Brockbank, Hillerby, Owen

With Liam O’Sullivan away, Marske reverted to a 4-3-3 formation. Chay Liddle was
also relegated to the bench with Curtis Round and Matty Waters restored to the
starting line-up with Waters in the advanced midfield role with Round and Brad
Plant on either side of Jamie Owens.
The first chance for either side went to Marske on 4 minutes. Owens retrieved an
overhit Round cross and cut inside onto his favoured left foot, but his shot was
straight at Charlie Andrew, who saved with ease. Marske were on the front foot in
the early stages and Plant was next to try his luck but his shot looped up off a
defender allowing Andrew to save with ease under his crossbar. Marske had an
escape on 11 minutes when a deep corner to the back post was headed over by the
unmarked Billy Logan. With 14 minutes on the clock, the home side were awarded
a penalty which Marske hotly disputed. Adam Wheatley was rightly booked for a
foul on the left hand side, though the resulting caution was a little harsh. From the
resulting free kick Dean appeared to be clearly fouled as he went to collect the
deep set-piece but referee Matt Sowerby failed to award a free kick and Dean then
brought down Goerge Bissett in an attempt to reclaim the ball. Ryan Blott stepped
up to take the spot kick and though Dean guessed right the penalty had too much
pace and power. Marske countered and a pinpoint cross-field ball from Butterworth
found Round who saw his 20 yard effort tipped around the post by Andrew. The
Pikes keeper was in the thick of the action, making a routine save from Round
moments later before the same player saw his cross tipped around the post by the
scrambling Andrew. On 34 minutes, poor Marske defending allowed Joe Danby to
burst clear but his shot was horribly sliced and went wide. As half time approached
a 25 yard shot from Plant was saved by Andrew at the second attempt.
Half Time: Pickering 1 Marske 0
The home side made a change at half-time with Matty Turnbull replacing Bissett.
Marske had an escape right at the start of the half when sub Turnbull hit the
outside of the post but the game soon reverted to the pattern of the first half with
Marske having much of the possession as Pickering defended in numbers. On 55
minutes Josh Rowbotham and Round combined on the left with Round firing a cross
into the box which was just missed by Plant. Owens then fired over the bar after
neat build-up play around the edge of the box. Waters then saw an acrobatic
overhead kick from 18 yards go just wide, which was his last action of the game as
he was replaced by Fairley who went onto the right of the front three, with Plant
as the attacking midfielder. A minute later, Adam Lund was booked for punching
the ball away on the ground to prevent Round advancing into the box; the ensuing
free kick from Callum Martin was only cleared as far as Fairley who volleyed over
the bar. At the other end Turnbull fired wide before Martin became the second
Marske player booked for a foul near the touchline on Brad Freer. As the game
entered the last 10 minutes, Marske sent skipper Wheatley up front as they tried to

find a way back into the game, playing was essentially a 3-3-4 formation.
Wheatley’s presence saw the big centre back win a number of headers as Marske
resorted to a more direct approach. On 83 minutes, a may run from the tricky
Plant ended with a shot that went just wide. Marske came within inches of
equalising with 5 minutes left. Wheatley was fouled 30 yards from goal and the
delivery from Craig Gott was inch perfect and met by the unmarked Andrew May
who headed against the bar with Andrew beaten. A minute later, Wheatley won
another ball in the air which allowed Owens to cross from the right but superb
defending from Pickering stopped Round having a tap-in. Fairley was next to
deliver a cross into the box but it flashed across the face of goal within no-one
there to get the final touch. Marske were very nearly caught on the counter with 3
minutes to go when a long ball forward caught out Rowbotham but Logan fired
against the post. As the game entered 4 minutes of injury time, Butterworth had a
shot blocked but it wasn’t to be Marske’s day as the home side ran out 1-0
winners.
Full Time: Pickering 1 Marske 0

Marske dominated possession but didn’t do enough to test Pickering keeper Charlie
Andrew with chances mainly restricted to long distance efforts other than May’s
header that hit the bar. The home side defended superbly, with the centre back
pairing of Vaulks and Tilsley being the pick of their players as Marske suffered
another disappointing defeat to drop to 9 th in the table.
