Marske United Fan Michael Passes away

Michael was born in Saltburn and attended Saltburn Primary school. He moved to Marske in time to go to Byedales Secondary school.

He was a life-long, passionate follower of sports. He loved to watch cricket and became a member of the ‘Barmy Army’ in 2002, following the England team to Australia. He followed the major snooker tournaments on the TV but football was his No 1 love

He was born with a major congenital heart defect. As a little boy he found chasing the ball for long periods of time difficult but it didn’t deter him. When he was 9 he became keeper for the school team and valiantly defended that goal, although balls did hurtle past him on a few occasions.

At this time began his love of Liverpool FC which he followed, through the highs and lows, throughout his life. As an adult he became interested in the fortunes of his local club, Marske United and followed its highs and lows as well.

He moved to Leeds, becoming a teaching assistant, helping sometimes very unfortunate youngsters reach their potential, and involving himself with school football teams.
He often visited Marske and would make a point of catching a game. In 2023, in a strange act of fate, he secured a position as teaching assistant at Saltburn Primary school. He was happy to be ‘home’ and set to become a regular supporter at the club, attending all the home matches last season.

His family recognises both his fondness for Marske United and his understanding of the importance of the smaller clubs in giving young people the opportunity to play and enjoy football. We therefore wanted to do something for the club and asked for donations at his funeral.

The Leeds branch of the Liverpool football supporters’ group, of which Michael was a much-loved member, added very generously to the amount. We know this donation will be put to good use.

Marske United gave Michael a lot of pleasure over the years and we wish to thank you for that.

RIP Michael
