Power cuts plagued the North East in the week leading up to the November Northern League Cup game although the floodlights stayed on at Mount Pleasant to give the crowd of 235 people a seven-goal spectacle
Bottom of the league Guisborough shocked the home side at the start and found themselves 2–0 up after 34 minutes as the two sides clashed in the cup on a cold Tuesday night in Cleveland.
Striker Gary Wood struck after six minutes for Guisborough and volleyed the ball into the back of the net to give the away team an early advantage.
Matters were made worse for Marske as they conceded a penalty for handball and David Onions powered the shot past keeper Robert Dean.
The Seasiders did manage to grab a goal just before the interval. Peter Bulmer bounced the ball into the back of the net of the next with one-minute remaining.
Marske manager Carl Jarrett was not impressed with his side’s first half performance and said: “I was a bit annoyed at half time and a few words were spoken”.
The half time talk was effective as the home side transformed into a totally different team after the interval.
Fan favourite Danny Earl equalised in the 54th minute and the crowd chanted his name with delight.
However, play was subsequently stopped as Marske midfielder Nathan Mulligan was treated for a head injury.
After some treatment, Mulligan returned to the fray sporting a bandage and battled on with Terry Butcher esque esteem.
The game looked set for extra time as the two sides were locked in a stalemate with 10 minutes to go, however that changed when Corey Nicholson smashed a shot into the top of the goal.
Marske quickly added another when right back Lee Brockbank scored a stunner from 35 yards out, leaving his manager impressed.
Jarrett said: “He’s texting everyone. It was a cracking goal”.
The final blow from Marske came just before the full-time whistle as Reece Kelly grabbed the last goal of the game and made it five. His superb shot beat keeper Guisborough Ben Escritt to wrap up the win for the home side.
Marske United progressed into the next round of the cup, although it wouldn’t be long before the two sides met later again that season on Boxing Day in the league.
