Paul Burton admitted he would like to see his Marske United be a little more clinical following a narrow victory over Northallerton Town at the John Keegan Stadium.

The boss cited two or three chances that the Seasiders had passed up during a one-goal win - missed opportunities that could have proved more costly on another day.

Marske were in control of the game from the tenth minute when Jey Draper first tested the grasp of shot-stopper Ben Fairless.

Draper, the returning Charlie Watt and Finn McKittrick all saw chances go astray, before the latter picked out the far corner to put away Oscar Mahoney’s long pass.

Paul Burton was pleased to pick up three points - arguing it was deserved on the balance of play - but would have liked to have seen more of a killer instinct in the final third.

“I think we deserved the win over the ninety minutes. In the first half we were the better team, and should probably have come in two goals clear.” He said.

“I think that was the only disappointing thing for me, that we didn’t take our chances. We had two or three really good opportunities that we sort of let go.

“Remember the game against Blyth Town? We were on top, we kept the ball well and we played well, but we just didn’t take our chances when we had them. They got one opportunity and beat us one-nil.

“At halftime, we said the important thing is not to fall into that trap again. We didn’t, and that’s the pleasing thing.

“For me, we just need to start finishing teams off. We allowed them some hope. Even when they were down to ten men we allowed them that belief. All it takes is one mistake, and it’s a different game.”

Marske’s goal came shortly after the hour mark, and is some style. Debutant Oscar Mahoney sprung a long ball out to the flank, and Finn McKittrick did well to bring it down, beat his man and find the target.

Burton has plenty of praise for the young starlet, labelling him a big player for the future of the club, with great ability.

He said: “Finn is a great kid. He’s still only a young lad but he’s got great pace and great ability. We just want him to be positive, we want him to have that belief in himself.

“He can drop a shoulder and knock it five yards, and nobody is going to stay with him.

“I thought it was a great goal. He was tenacious. He had to battle a little bit but he got through there, and to be fair to him, it was a great finish.

“He will be a big, big player for this club, I’m absolutely delighted for him.”
