Debutant Watt scores from spot in opening day draw

Debutant Watt scores from spot in opening day draw

Ashley Stone

Our report as Charlie Watt scores on debut to earn the Seasiders a point.

Marske United opened the campaign with a point in tough conditions at the John Keegan Stadium - debutant Charlie Watt on target to peg back Whickham.

The visitors took the lead when Jamie Storey’s cross deflected beyond Mike Algie.

Dom Joynes was felled in the box at the award of a spot kick. Charlie Watt made no mistake, beating Ollie Walker to see the spoils split on opening day.

It was Whickham who started the brighter on a gusty afternoon at the John Keegan Stadium.

Mike Algie had to be alert to deny Liam Heywood from a corner, whilst David Palmer arrived onto a loose ball to cannon an effort wide and off the advertising hoardings.

Jamie Storey forced the mistake that lead to the opening goal - his cross was poked beyond Algie by the outstretched leg of Tom Eglinton.

At the other end, Marske’s first forays into the attacking third were far from successful.

Danny Boyle’s cross sailed high of the bar, before Joe Thompson found the gloves of Ollie Walker with a delivery from deep.

Dom Joynes was brought down on a fast break to earn the Seasiders a penalty on the stroke of halftime.

Oneness fell to debutant Charlie Watt to take the kick, the forward beating Ollie Walker with a vicious strike to restore parity.

Kenzie Harker and Cam Thomson caused problems for the Lang Jacks’ backline once thrust into the fray after the break.

Harker cut inside from the left to draw a strong stop from Walker, whilst Thomson found fellow substitute Joe Dixon, who couldn’t take the ball in his stride.

Marske perhaps should have taken the lead when Charlie Watt broke free for the first time. The forward was denied again by the Whickham shot-stopper, his loose stop unpunished and the danger cleared.

Cam Thomson almost caught Ollie Walker out with a dipping strike most-definitely intended as a cross, whilst Liam Heywood fired high at the other end as a fast break came close to seeing the spoils slip away.
