Marske United climbed to tenth in the Ebac Northern League Division One with a battling victory over Crook Town at the Sir Tom Cowie Millfield Ground.

Charlie Watt made the scoresheet on a gusty evening in County Durham, thumping home the only goal of the game following an unforced defensive mistake.

The Seasiders held on through a late bombardment to take all three points, though lost Finn McKittrick to a second yellow card deep into stoppage time.

It was far from an instant classic at the historic Millfield Ground. High winds marred the best of the aerial play, with chances at a premium for both sides.

Charlie Watt’s clever back heel was cut out on the edge of the area. Danny Boyle turned well to drop his marker, but failed to test Kyle Hayes from close range.

The in-form Glen Hargrave caused problems at the other end. He flashed an inviting cutback beyond the reach of those in Black and Amber, later forcing Mike Algie into a strong stop with an outstretched leg.

Marske looked the more dangerous of the two when play resumed after the break. Danny Boyle’s cross saw Charlie Watt’s effort blocked, whilst Kenzie Harker suffered the same fate on a quick break.

A slip at the back opened the door for the Seasiders to break the deadlock. Charlie Watt seized possession, streaking down the left flank to pick out the near top corner.

His strike forced Crook onto offence during a nervy final twenty minutes. Mike Algie was twice alert to deny Finlay Rose and Glen Hargrave, whilst Corey Nicholson’s free kick struck Joe Bennett in the face.

Second half substitute Finn McKittrick was shown a yellow card for a challenge on the touchline, receiving his marching orders having brought down Alexander Wright on a fast breakaway.
