Dom Joynes and Charlie Watt Strike in Valiant Emirates FA Cup Win

Ashley Stone

Our report as Marske United beat Consett to advance to the Emirates FA Cup First Qualifying Round.

Marske United battled valiantly to beat Northern Premier League Consett in a tough Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round tie at the Belle View Stadium.

The Seasiders hit the front in the opening half hour through strikes from Dom Joynes and Charlie Watt. Isaac Walker netted the hosts’ solitary goal.

An injury to Watt forced Marske to sit deep for the last hour of play, but Consett were unable to breach what proved a well-organised and steadfast backline.

It was the Seasiders who started the brighter on a perfect afternoon for football at the Belle View Stadium.

Charlie Watt curled a dead ball into Consett shot-stopper Harry Moss’s grateful grasp, before Dom Joynes reacted well to turn home Tyler Goodman’s blocked attempt.

The hosts quickly levelled through former Redcar Athletic man Isaac Walker. The forward proved at the forefront of all of Consett’s success, twice more drawing a stop from Mike Algie in the opening half.

It was Charlie Watt once again who thumped Marske into the lead, rising highest in the box to nod Joe Thompson’s pinpoint delivery past Harry Moss.

His afternoon would last no longer, however, as a nasty collision with the barrier brought an abrupt halt. Joe Dixon entered play in his place, as Marske began to sit deeper.

Sam Spenceley made a superb last ditch intervention to deny Isaac Walker, whilst Danny Boyle was booked for stopping a quick breakaway.

Mike Algie had to be on his toes once again when Will Constantin fired low and across goal, before Matthew Todd was brought down outside the area whilst gearing up to strike from range.

Marske did have opportunities at the other end. Algie picked out Kenzie Harker with a long ball - who volleyed wide - whilst Danny Boyle dragged an effort past the far post.

Tom Eglinton had the ball in the back of the net from another well executed set piece, but was penalised for a push. Dan Bean drove through the midfield, but his attempt to play in Clayton McDonald was cut out.

Consett’s last opportunity came through Donny Holdsworth, who turned and volleyed high and wide from the center of the box.

The Seasiders battled safely through to the First Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup, a first victory on an artificial playing service for almost four years.
