Marske United Exit Emirates FA Cup After Workington Defeat

Marske United Exit Emirates FA Cup After Workington Defeat

Ashley Stone

The Seasiders were beaten by Northern Premier League opposition in the Lake District.

Marske United bowed out of the Emirates FA Cup to higher level opposition - well beaten by an impressive Workington at the Fibrus Community Stadium.

The Seasiders competed well, though were dealt a harsh blow on the stroke of halftime when Charlie Barnes fired home.

Further strikes from Luke Hunter and Tom Stephenson stamped the Reds’ safe passage to the Second Qualifying Round in a dominant second half showing.

A perfect afternoon for football at the Fibrus Community Stadium, it was Workington who started the brighter against a somewhat depleted Marske side.

Sam Spenceley climbed to nod an early cross behind, whilst Mike Algie was called into action to deny Matty Douglas’s headed effort at the back post.

Luke Hunter soon drew another stop from the shot-stopper on a fast break. Brad Carroll took aim from range, but failed to find the target with Algie beaten.

Marske grew into the contest as the minutes ticked by. Kenzie Harker’s effort deflected into the grasp of Alex Mitchell, whilst a poor back pass came agonisingly close to the control of a tireless Tyler Goodman.

Danny Boyle was the beneficiary of a loose clearance from the hosts’ number one. He took on the chance from deep in the midfield, but failed to find the target.

At the other end, Mike Algie’s work was far from over as his quick reflexes were needed to deny Brad Carroll.

A scramble soon found Charlie Barnes at the back post, who opened the scoring.

Workington upped the tempo with a goal advantage. Mike Algie produced a double stop to deny Luke Hunter, who soon found the back of the net to put the tie to bed.

Matty Douglas fired over the bar from close range, whilst only a fantastic block from Dom Joynes denied Hunter a second. Tom Stephenson added a third when the Reds were awarded a soft free-kick.
