Pontefract Collieries vs Marske United – Match Preview
This Saturday, Marske make the relatively short trip to Beechnut Lane to face top of the form table Pontefract Collieries, in arguably the game of the day in the BetVictor Northern Premier Division North West.
In what will undoubtedly be one of the toughest tests of the season for the Seasiders, against a team that has played 5 and won 5 at home in the League, Marske make the trip on the back of an excellent 3-1 win versus Brighouse Town, a game in which they had to play over half an hour with 10 men. Lewis Maloney, sent off against Brighouse, will miss the game through suspension.
Both teams have relatively similar records in the league, with both Colls and Marske having games in hand on all teams around them. Marske sit in 7th place, just outside the play-offs, with a record of played 16, won 10, drawn 3 and lost 3. Colls are 5th, also having played 16 games, winning 11, drawing 3 and losing 2. The two sides have two of the best three defensive records in the division (Tadcaster Albion are the other side), with Marske having conceded 18 goals in their 16 games, whereas Pontefract have conceded only 14 goals.
Looking forward to the game, Marske manager Carl Jarrett commented “the game this coming weekend at Pontefract is massive for both clubs. It will be a hard game as I see us as similar teams, both defend well and attack well, so it has the makings of a cracker”.
Last Season – the teams couldn’t be split in either game with both finishing 1-1. Pontefract took the lead in the game at Beechnut Lane, played in October, through Jack Greenough but Marske equalised soon after through Curtis Round. The Seasiders should have come away with all three points, but Jamie Owens missed a sitter in the closing moments.
At Mount Pleasant, it was Colls who also took the lead through Eli Hey, now with Colne but Marske equalised on the half hour mark through Matty Waters.
Men to Watch – Joe Lumsden. The ex-Tadcaster striker is a handful for any defence thanks to his physical nature and excellent hold up play.
Keep an eye out too for full back Jack Greenhough, who is excellent going forward and has an eye for goal.
If you are unable to make the game, you can follow it on the Marske United Twitter feed, with team news from around 2.15.
