Workington vs Marske United Match Preview
For the second week in a row, Marske are arguably involved in the game of the day in the BetVictor Northern Premier League North West as they make the trip from the East coast to the West coast to face league leaders Workington.
The Seasiders are buoyant following their hard-earned, but deserved win at Pontefract Collieries last week, where a Curtis Round goal made it 4 wins from 4 in the League for Marske. This put them in 6th place in the form table with 12 points from the last 18, with the Reds in slightly better form than Marske with 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat from their last 6 games, though they have scored an impressive 19 goals in those 6 games.
The Reds lead the table with 44 points from 21 games having won 13, drawn 5 and lost 3 so far this season. They are the division’s second highest scorers, only behind Ramsbottom United, having scored 48 goals in the league. Their home record is impressive (but so was Pontefract’s) having played 11, won 8 and drawn 3. Marske currently sit in 5th place with games in hand on all but one of the teams around them, and have played 17, won 11, drawn 3 and lost 3. Marske have scored 38 goals in those 17 games and conceded just 18 so the game pits the division’s second highest scorers against the third best defence.
Earlier this season – the teams fought out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Mount Pleasant in October with Marske leading twice before being pegged back on both occasions. Curtis Round opened the scoring on 18 minutes only for the Reds to draw level thanks to Bradley Hubbold on 36 minutes. Andrew Stephenson’s 63rd minute goal gave Marske the lead again only for Ash Kelly to equalise with 18 minutes left as the points were shared.
Man to Watch – the league’s second top scorer is Workington’s Scott Allison and he is in a rich vein of form currently with 9 goals in his last 7 league games and 13 overall. He is currently to give the league’s second-best defence a tough examination.
Speaking to the official Marske United website tonight, Marske manager Carl Jarrett commented “our game at Workington at the weekend is our biggest game of the season. Both teams are good teams who are playing well at the moment. It will be a tough place to go but we can’t wait for the challenge”.
