Colne Match Preview
Marske make their second visit of the season to The Sovereign Play Stadium having already faced The Reds in the FA Trophy. That game didn’t go to plan as Marske had to play 87 minutes with 10 men after the early sending off of Callum Martin. Burnley loanee Will Harris (now at Warrington Town) opened the scoring in the first half and Connor Hughes scored at the start of the second half after a scramble. Despite Andrew Stephenson getting a goal back with 11 minutes left, Marske couldn’t force an equaliser. As well as missing Harris, the other player who caused Marske a number of problems in the above game – Sefton Gonzales – is also no longer at the club having signed for South Shields.
Marske currently sit 5th in the table, and in the final play off spot, with 40 points from 21 points following their 0-0 draw against Clitheroe on Tuesday. Marske’s away record is average with 13 points (4 wins, 1 draw and 5 defeats) from 10 games. Colne are currently 16th with 24 points from 21 games but have games in hand on all but 1 of the teams in the bottom half of the table and winning those games would catapult them into the top half of the table and they certainly seem to be in a false position based on how they played in the FA Trophy game. Their home record is actually worse than their away record with 3 wins and 1 draw from 10 games.
In terms of current form, Marske sit in 8th place in the form table with 3 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats from their last 6 games. Colne are in 16th place with 5 points from their last 6 games. On Tuesday night they lost 1-0 at City of Liverpool thanks to an unfortunate own goal from keeper Hakan Burton. The previous Saturday, they beat Pickering Town 2-0 thanks to an own goal and a late goal from William Hassler-Cregg. Prior to that, they had two creditable goalless draws away to Trafford and Prescot Cables. They had two home games before this, losing 3-0 to Workington and 1-0 to Dunston.
Marske expect to have a full squad available and will be desperate to get back to winning ways following just 1 point and no goals from their last 2 games.
Man to Watch – Eli Hey. The big striker is a familiar face to Marske fans, having played for Pontefract Collieries last season, scoring in the game between the two teams at Mount Pleasant. Having broken his leg at the end of last season, Hey started this season at Step 5 with Eccleshill United before being picked up by Colne at the end of last year. A big target man, who is also good with the ball at his feet, he will be a big test for the Marske defence.
Marske were made very welcome at the game at Colne earlier in the season, and we look forward to visiting again this Saturday for what is bound to be another tough game.
