Post-Match Reaction: Whitley Bay 1-0 Marske United

The Seasiders boss offered his thoughts after defeat at Hillheads Park.

Paul Burton admitted he was far from concerned with defeat to Whitley Bay, praising the performance of his Marske United side amidst gusty conditions.

The boss was disappointed to come away to Hillheads Park and lose, but far from as frustrated as on Tuesday night following a hefty loss at Bedford Terrace.

Marske battled hard at both ends of the field, yet were ultimately undone by an early miscommunication in the backline.

Sam Spenceley and Tom Marron both shared a ‘moment of hesitation,’ giving Joseph Power the chance to tee up Mackenzie Sharp waiting in the centre.

The Seasiders were otherwise dogged, robust at the back and a threat going forward. Paul Burton argued that on another day, his side could easily have come away with more to show for it.

“From my perspective, I thought the performance was much better than Tuesday over the ninety minutes.” He said.

“I thought in the first half we were the better team. I thought we controlled the game quite well against the wind, which sometimes helps to be fair.

“I just think one moment of hesitation has cost us a point today. There was a moment between Tom Marron and Sam Spenceley, it just allowed them to get in behind and put the ball in the box.

“After that, they’ve had a couple of shots, but Mike’s not really had a proper save to make. We blocked things in the second half, but overall, it was much better.

“Like I said on Tuesday, I can accept getting beat when we’ve gone and put a shift in. I thought today, to a man, we did.

“There were some really good performances out there. I thought Joe Thompson had his best game for us. Leo Robinson, who will be a massive asset for us, and James Sayer.

“I’m not too concerned at all. Yes, it’s disappointing to lose, but, I think anyone who watched that game would have believed that we deserved a point.

“We had one or two chances. Jey Draper had one on the touchline, he’s spun and hit the man. If he shanks it, I think it goes in.

“On another day, I think we would’ve come away with something there. I’m disappointed, but not as disappointed as I was on Tuesday night.

“Now we’ve just got to get bodies back, and we’ll go again next week against Penrith.”
