Post-Match Reaction: Yarm and Eaglescliffe 4-0 Marske United

The boss offered his thoughts on an ‘embarrassing’ defeat at Bedford Terrace.

A frustrated Paul Burton blasted his Marske United side after a heavy defeat to Yarm and Eaglescliffe at Bedford Terrace.

The Seasiders perhaps started the better, but were soon put to the sword in a display the boss labelled as ‘embarrassing.’

Joshua Larkin opened the scoring with a sensational strike from range.

Defensive mistakes gifted the hosts three goals in the second half. Tyler Goodman was shown a red card for a late challenge minutes after entering play.

For Paul Burton, it was a performance far from reflective of the efforts he and his side have put in. He branded the display unacceptable, especially given a string of positive results.

“That second half was embarrassing.” He said. “How can they accept that? How can they accept that performance from themselves?

“First half I thought we did alright. We kept the ball well in spells and actually created one really good chance. We hit the bar, and I think their ‘keeper made a good save.

“They’ve had a few chances. I think James Rowe blocked one with his head.

“We knew what to expect, they’re a big side. We knew exactly how they would play. They’re a proper Northern League team. They play percentages, just like Birtley did.

“If you put the ball in the box, or in those areas, eventually you get a break.

“We said at halftime, the next goal was crucial. We knew we had to get it, if they got it, we knew we would struggle.

“I just felt as soon as that goal went in our heads went down.

“The third goal was the most disappointing. Their lad has ran from midfield, nobody has tracked him. Josh Larkin is stood on his own and puts the ball in the back of the net.

“The players have to take some responsibility. How can this group beat Northallerton, beat Shildon, draw with Newcastle Benfield and then come here and get beat like that.

“It’s just not acceptable.“

Tyler Goodman’s dismissal was the Seasiders’ fifth of the season, and third in successive games.

Clayton McDonald walked for a late challenge against Horden, and Charlie Watt for a rash reaction to a poor refereeing decision last weekend against Birtley Town.

“I am concerned.” Paul Burton said.

“I thought the red card last week at Horden was a poor challenge. Their lad got in front of him, but I think ‘Scholesy’ was already committed to the challenge. On another day it might have been just a yellow.

“I didn’t see Saturday’s, and I’m not just saying that. It put us down to ten men against a difficult team in Birtley.

“We’ve played against a top three, maybe top four side here, and we’re down to ten again. Tyler did extremely well, but then he’s followed through and caught his man. There was no argument really.

“It’s disappointing, because then it puts us in damage limitation. We’re three-nil down, chasing a game, and you’re thinking that this could get embarrassing.

“I think we were lucky to keep it at four.”
