Assistant boss Dave Onions hailed a different side to Marske as the Seasiders pulled out a remarkable victory over promotion-chasing Shildon.

Jey Draper opened the scoring, before Oscar Mahoney opened his account for the club during a scramble from a corner.

Shildon fought back through Ben Reay, and scored with the last kick of the game to close the deficit, but it was Tyler Goodman who sealed the spoils with a fantastic solo goal on the stroke of the ninety.

Marske now boast four wins and two draws from seven games at the John Keegan Stadium, which Dave Onions admitted was turning in to somewhat of a fortress.

He hailed his players for a superb performance, praising their ability to dig in, following instructions, and hurt one of the best teams in the division.

“We challenged the lads before the game to go and make this place a bit of a fortress for us.” Dave Onions said.

“We had a good win on Saturday, but we knew Shildon were going to be a good team. They’re going to be up there at the end of the season, they’re going to be challenging for promotion.

“We asked our lads to go out there and follow instructions, and man for man, they did what they needed to do. You couldn’t fault one to eleven, and the subs that came on were just as good.

“We’ve got to start believing in ourselves at home. I think we’ve had seven games here in all competitions, won four and drawn two of them. We’ve only been beaten by Blyth.

“This place needs to be hard for teams to come to. We need to dig deep and put in a performance, and we’ve certainly done that today. I can’t fault the lads.”

One of the biggest criticisms of Marske United this season has been a lack of confidence in front of goal.

Dave Onions admitted it was talk he was keen to ignore. He praised his side for their continued defensive solidity, and for tucking away chances when it mattered most.

“I’ve heard that a bit, though it doesn’t really bother me. I’d rather take a one-nil win every game this season!” He said.

“We can be solid at the back, and clinical in getting that one goal up top, and that’s been enough for us.

“Jey got us off to a good start tonight. We got a good goal off a corner which was really pleasing I thought. We work hard on our set pieces. Tyler finished it off with a great solo goal at the end there.

“I’m always pleased to get goals. It showed a different side to us tonight that we haven’t really seen much this season, but three points is three points.

“To be fair though, you’ve got to give Shildon credit. They’ve got a lot of good individuals, and they will be right up there at the end of the season.

“For us to limit their chances in the way that we did, we made it hard for them. The goal at the end takes a bit of the shine off. The referee said there was six minutes added, and they scored in the ninety-eighth.

“But, it is what it is. The lads are honestly over the moon in there, and I’m delighted.”
